How Does a Water Softener Work?

Why a Water Softener is Important

Water SoftenerWe value the water that is coming into our homes…we use it to drink, bathe, wash, and even play in. At Tai Irwin Plumbing we receive a lot of questions about how customers can improve the precious water that they use everyday.

Our answer is simple: install a water softener. This is typically followed by the question, “What is a water softener?”

Water that travels through your pipes originated from the outside world. As nature would have it, water is an excellent solvent that picks up impurities very easily. When carbon dioxide mixes with water, its solvent properties increase becoming better at picking up impurities. The most common impurities found are calcium and magnesium.

This carbonic acid poses no health risk but does affect your property and purse. The buildup of calcium and magnesium prevents water from flowing efficiently through pipes, causing your water bill to raise. Making suds is harder when bathing and washing dishes. If you have noticed white stains around faucets, fixtures, dish pans, water pitchers, or any other object that handles your water than you most likely have hard water.

So how do you fix this problem?

Simple.

Install a water softener.

Essentially, a water softener removes the impurities from the water. This is usually the part customers ask, “And how does a water softener work?” – to which we always respond, “I’m glad you asked!”

The process uses electromagnetic charge to draw the impurities, specifically calcium and magnesium. The process is referred to as an ion exchange.

The ion exchange takes place inside the ion exchange tank that houses negatively charged resin beads. The resin beads swap sodium ions for the calcium and magnesium when hard water passes.

The maintenance of a ion exchange is minimum and the duration is high – lasting years before needing to be replaced.
